Draw lines and shapes in Dottie on Mac

The Line L, Rectangle R, and Oval O tools drag out a live preview; release to commit. The brush size sets the stroke thickness, and the current dither level applies.

On a pixel layer, these tools write pixels immediately. On a vector layer, they create editable vector objects you can select, move, resize, recolour, or later convert back to pixels.

Lines

Drag from one point to another. Hold Shift to snap the angle to the nearest 15°—handy for the 45° and 26.5° slopes pixel art relies on.

Rectangles and ovals

ModifierEffect
Shift

Constrain to a perfect square or circle.

Option

Draw outward from the centre instead of corner to corner.

Command

Draw the shape filled instead of outlined.

Modifiers combine—Shift+Option drags a perfect circle out from its centre point.

Vector shapes

Choose a vector layer, then use the same shape tools to make editable objects. Use the Vector Select tool V to move a shape, drag its handles, or delete it. Use the Poly Line tool B to build a path one vertex at a time.

To recolour objects you've selected with the Vector Select tool, click a palette colour—this restyles them in place, changing each object's colour (its outline colour, or its fill colour when the shape is filled). You can also recolour an object directly with the Fill tool K: click it to fill with the primary colour, or hold Command to recolour just its outline.
