Surgical SVG editing that respects your markup
Coming SoonRequires macOS Ventura 13.0 or later
Scalpel is a native Mac SVG editor that treats markup as the document.
Open an .svg or .svgz, draw on the canvas, and the file you opened is what you save. Comments, CDATA, and constructs the canvas does not yet render stay in the source. No proprietary format, no round-trip surprise.
-
Source-PreservingEdits rewrite the SVG you opened—comments and all
-

Canvas and code, together
The window is a canvas, a layers-and-inspect sidebar, and a code view that can sit underneath.
- Select, move, and resize on the canvas; Shift-click to add to the selection
- Node tool for path points, with a marquee for several at once
- Rectangle, ellipse, line, polyline, polygon, path, and text
- Code view shows the live source, with a Diff against the opening baseline
- Sync Selection highlights the matching markup when you click a shape, and the other way around
- Tidy Markup reindents without changing meaning
- Parse errors list line and column; the canvas keeps the last good tree
Layers that are the document
The outline is the SVG tree.
- Drag to reorder; copy or move
- Group (
⌘G) and Ungroup (⇧⌘G) - Lock, hide, duplicate (
⌘D) - Paste into Group keeps local coordinates
- Bring to Front, Forward, Backward, Send to Back
- Expand or collapse an item, its descendants, a level, or the whole tree
Inspect and arrange
Select a shape and the inspector shows what the source actually says.
- Type,
id, andclass - Fill and stroke: Automatic, None, Color, Current Color, with opacity
- Geometry fields for rect, circle, ellipse, and line; point tables for paths
- Rotate, scale, flip, and ±90° around the selection centre
- Align two or more; distribute three or more
- Existing transform stacks and group-local coordinates are kept
Snap, grid, nudge
- Grid styles: Gridlines, Centre Dots, Corner Dots, Crosshairs
- Snap to grid, guides, and shapes—in local units inside a group
- Hold
⌥while dragging to suppress snap - Arrow keys nudge;
⇧and⌥multiply the step - Settings remember grid, snap, and nudge defaults
Paths and text
- Close (
⌘J), open (⇧⌘J), join (⌥⌘J), reverse winding - In-place text editing: Return commits, Escape cancels
- Nested text markup stays in source until you edit it there
